Freedom's Song
A Message from Farmers' CEO

Dear Educator,

Welcome to Freedom’s Song: 100 years of African American struggle and triumph.

Freedom’s Song is an outstanding addition to your American History curriculum. It provides 10 lessons, one for each decade of the 20th Century, that may have been overlooked in your history textbooks or included just as a footnote. These lessons and the documentary that accompany them were created and funded by Farmers Insurance. We provide them free to middle and high school educators.

We have long been supporters and creators of quality education programs. The American Promise, a PBS series Farmers funded over ten years ago, has enjoyed great success over the past decade. The DVD and lesson plans (K through 12) are in more than 150,000 classrooms nationwide and enjoyed by an estimated 3 million students a year. The Bronze Screen is an HBO special that relates the involvement of Latinos in American Cinema. An activity book also accompanies the DVD designed for high school students.

I hope you find Freedom’s Song informative and helpful in bringing history to life for your students.

Thank you for the work you do and good luck!

1900-1910: The Niagara Movement
In February 1905, Dr. John Hope Franklin, W.E.B. Dubois and 30 others met secretly in the home of Mary B. Talbert, a prominent member of Buffalo's Michigan Street Baptist Church, to adopt the resolutions that lead to the founding of the Niagara Movement. The name came because of the location and the "mighty current" of protest they wished to unleash.
